After Thoughts

eternallystressed Having grown up in the DMV with Russian ancestry, it always felt like an intrinsic part of what I looked for in music. This album is like Joni Mitchell with Slavic influence and modern angst. My first listen through brought me to tears... and an immediate second listen through. Favorite track: Starik Kozlodoev (Akvarium).

murugan2 Soulfull, genuine, courageous, honest. Some lessons can only be learned through experience. A mature album by a new voice. A DC punk original who made a record that captures the stark reality of memory in a very an un-punk style.
A bit of analog truth in a world of digital lies.

What happens to you in your dreams? Do you cry, do you smile, or do you fly? If you concentrate or maybe pray You just might strike gold someday Magic can be dark or light Three wrongs might make a right Patterns they might come undone But songs they can’t be unsung Wake up my dove Hold me my love Come here my love And wake up my love What pleasure is there more than this Your sharp frame, your white kiss What world is there beyond your eyes A tree in bloom, the night sky Come here my love Hold me my love Come here my love And drink up my love Drink up my love

White Flag 03:54
I take you out of my drawer Where you’ve waited so long And what I’ve bought you for His hunger is strong You’re cool in my hands Silver hooks, shiny black And when I stretch you on I’m an Amazon Cause there’s this sense that I get From the breadth of your chest And the smell I inhale when I’m right at your neck And I’ll do whatever you please From up high or down on my knees I take you out of my drawer Where you’ve been in the dark Folded and ironed Three years retired You’re soft in my hands I can hardly stand Up but I take you outside And I’m ready to let you fly I surrender, I give up my treasure I’m through, I’m alone in a desert With charms that apparently lack I raise my white flag And I’ll watch it wave in the breeze From down on the ground, on my knees And accept what you already knew That you and I are through You sleep, your leg against mine Seems like not much time Has passed since you were inside me, Cells divide, now you're just like me. I love you, I’ll love you forever God help me please to do better Can I keep you from roaming the streets Searching for someone like me? And so I’m down on my knees Can you forgive me, please For all the nights I’ve been gone Leaving you alone?

Stars 03:57
Can I break free from the ghosts following me? Three of you came to my show One wise from near, long ago One dark with a strong grip on me One young, but he liked Molly Can you guess who I liked best? Turn around, turn around and open your eyes The world it holds a sweet surprise Three of you came to my show The wise one, I didn’t know The dark one cast me aside And the young one well he gave me a ride Can you guess what happened next? Can you see, can you see the stars covering me?

Max, you said to me On the coast of the Black Sea You asked what went wrong And where our love had gone The waves kept coming in But the air was getting thin And the best I had Was to blame it on my dad But I’ve said this before Could it mean something more Just last week you were right I never let you out of my sight And now it’s happening again Like an old distant friend Who shows up at the wrong time You’d better not touch me tonight Yes, I guess it’s true Maybe I loved you Your clean, green car Your smile a shining star We flew on dusty streets With an eye on the police And the lowest price Into Moscow’s morning light Now I’ve done this before Could it mean something more Just last week you were right I never let you out of my sight Now I only tell lies And to help I’ve got wine Just a dollar a bottle You’d better not touch me tonight Maybe when you were gone I could sense something wrong When you never called From the phone down the hall And I remembered, alone, The time I told you No You said the next day It can’t be this way You’ll find someone else Who won’t think just of herself Now I’ve heard that before And it means something more Just last week you were right I never let you out of my sight So you asked me what’s wrong And I started to think But before I could answer You said “Maybe you’re just a bitch.” Max you said to me On the coast of the Black Sea You asked what went wrong And where our love had gone

Rewind to the time Your heart pulled on mine I’d go to your shows Some things don’t get old Forward to today You’re here and you stay Tell me, what would you do If an old wish came true? But you said to me I wish I fucked you when you were 21 In a flash you are back And me, I’ll take the scraps What have I got to lose I’ve got nothing to lose How could this be wrong? You sing me your songs And I cling to this thing A distant dream But you said, you said to me I wish I fucked you when you were 21 And I miss you I call out your name Come back And light me up I wish I

1% Evil 04:18
Don’t throw your money at me What I want you could give for free That loving look in your eyes A little more of your time But you have better things to do A meeting, a rendezvous And I’m left with this sad hole A scar in my little boy soul. Time passes, what will come next Without you, there’s not much left I crave what you never gave Someday I’ll make you pay And then maybe you’ll see What you did to me Those countless times I was too small to fight Hey my beautiful girl We come from similar worlds I see it in your blue eyes We’re chasing the same prize And together we’re complete No one can compete Oh please don't stop loving me No don't you leave me They say I’m a good guy I'll look you right in the eye When I shake your hand And tell you who I am I learned that in the best schools Where I follow most of the rules And it’s generally understood I’m 99% good But 1% evil’s enough To break in your beautiful skull I’m not getting enough of your love Now no one will get your love ‘Cause I’m gonna leave you face down On your pillow to drown In your own sweet blood I think I’ll go get me a Bud.

Jewels 04:30
I want jewels on my face, jewels on my fingers This wave of regret should be gone, but it lingers And I’m back in your house, the leaves follow me in Restless thoughts in my head echo, I’m running The hotel window opens just wide enough If I could fit through, maybe I’d stop Remembering your black hair in the eve of my hall Now I’m hoping I will survive the next fall I want jewels on my face, jewels on my fingers This pain of regret should be gone, but it lingers And I’m back in your arms, we delay in the kitchen Desperate thoughts in my head echo, I’m falling I’ve been chasing a dream, in love with a myth An endless pursuit, every man is you But now I’ve lost this race, and you’re in the dirt Reduced to minerals for my rose bush I want jewels on my face, jewels on my fingers This taste of regret should be gone, but it lingers And I’m back in your bed, the leaves talk through the window Desperate thoughts in my head echo, I’m hollow.

Half Gram 03:29
The night stretches before me, all those hours so empty Hey Cristina let’s go out We’ll get dressed up I’ll pick you up And we’ll go get drunk First let’s stop and see Kaz at his place on Mass Ave. He’s nice he asks how I am I’m fine but I need a man Fine but I need a man If only I had a man Sometimes the truth appears in the strangest places The dressing room floor or my mom’s old basement But the old way’s so much more familiar Stop showing me things I don’t want to see Kaz said, girl, you are wrong, you don’t need anyone You are young and you’re free and you’re strong No you don’t need a man You can just be alone No you don’t need anyone That’s something I’ve heard, where I’m not sure I look down at my black skirt It makes no sense [What he’s saying makes no sense] There’s nothing else left It’s what I like best Sometimes the truth appears in the strangest places The dressing room floor or my mom’s old basement But the old way’s so much more familiar Stop telling me things I don’t want to hear No time to think, just time to act So I smiled and I paid and I said Kaz, give me my half gram Give me my half gram Just give me my half gram

about

Anna Connolly Washington, D.C.

Anna writes, plays, and sings songs that tell stories about the bare world of emotion and the human experience. AFTER THOUGHTS carries the listener through raw and stark songs about life’s ups and downs, about relationships gone wrong, about ironies and unexpected twists of fate.
